[VIDEO] HIIT the Hills: Cardio and Fat Loss

I invite you to take a peek at one of my hill running cardio sessions (filmed early summer 2010). An intense, and effective method for boosting metabolism and burning fat. This hill running session applies principles of High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), which is a series of cycles consisting of a work interval (running up the hill), and a rest interval (recovery, walking down the hill).

Water guilt: a natural reflex?

It’s amazing how smart your body is. Drinking water is so important to maintaining a lean and healthy physique, and there’s one way of knowing whether you’ve been doing things right. I call it water guilt, and it’s the sensation of guilt that overcomes you when you haven’t been drinking enough water.

Take time out to freeze your berries

Take time out to freeze your berries

My freezer is always stocked with a stash of frozen berries. Depending on my mood, season, or availability, I’ve either got strawberries, blueberries, or blackberries in there. These are extremely handy for whipping together quick meal-replacement smoothies, and make the world of a difference in your smoothie experience when they are frozen.

Just how effective is walking for cardio?

The other day, during my trip in Sri Lanka, I decided to head out for a walk. Nothing strenuous or fancy, just a simple casual walk. Except I wore my heart rate monitor to record some statistics. Any cardio is good cardio, and you should never underestimate the most simple of them all: walking. So just how effective is walking for cardio?

Traditional Sri Lankan food: Fish Ambul Thiyal

The other day I posted about the ever-popular tuna fish in Sri Lanka. Now here’s a traditional Sri Lankan dish using tuna, called Ambul Thiyal–also known as sour fish curry. It was part of the first home-cooked meal I had after arriving here. It might be one of those dishes that you either love or hate; its flavour is distinct, strong, and memorable.

Powerfoods of Sri Lanka Vol. 2: Tuna

October 19, 2010

High in protein, full of healthy fats, and easy to cook, tuna is a go-to protein choice for building muscle and staying lean. Based on my observation, in Sri Lanka, fish is the most common protein choice in cooking, and is very cheap compared to Canada. Tuna ranks high among the locals, and is used in many traditional dishes.

Travel Oatmeal in Sri Lanka

October 16, 2010

I had my first oatmeal breakfast here in Sri Lanka the other day. Oatmeal is one of my favourite things to eat first thing in the morning, so going on this trip to Sri Lanka with my mom, I was going to miss it. Oats are available here, but are very expensive. It’s considered a luxury item to many, which is quite the opposite back home in Canada! I considered packing a stash of dry oats with me on this trip, but decided not to at the last minute–but as it turned out, my mom packed a big batch!

The abundance of tropical fruits here in Sri Lanka is no surprise, and as I explored the area I quickly began to notice a bunch of stand-out fruits. I will publish a series on a select number of powerfoods I’ve encountered here, starting with this first volume on bananas.

Midmorning Avocado and Eggs

October 12, 2010

Fresh fruits are aplenty here in Sri Lanka, avocados being one of them. I don’t eat avocados as much at home, but I’m now inspired to re-introduce them back into my meals more frequently. A simple mid-morning meal I put together this morning consisted of fresh eggs, half an avocado, and a couple of small slices of whole grain bread.

I’m on a plane to Sri Lanka (and brought fitness with me)

October 9, 2010

When this post is published, I will be on a plane headed to Sri Lanka. I’m off on a vacation with mom for three weeks, to the motherland, where half of my heritage lies. I’m also taking fitness with me. Normally, I like it when I’ve got my own kitchen and foods by my side, and in full control of my fitness regimen. On the other hand, I like the challenge of going out of my comfort zone and taking fitness on the road. That’s what I’m doing for the next three weeks. So what have I done to prepare myself for the journey?
